Description
Neon Rays
This thread is a 1/16-inch flat, woven ribbon made of 100% rayon with a smooth, satiny finish and high shine. It is not metallic (Neon Rays+ is the metallic version), but still gives an almost liquid-like sheen that is ideal for stitching areas of water, for instance. It is ideal in long stitches in small areas.
- 100% Rayon

Tips for using Neon Rays in needlepoint
- Since this rayon ribbon requires more attention to maximize the flatness and sheen, most stitchers recommend using it in special, small areas rather than large backgrounds or in basic basketweave/tent stitches
- If using in folded stitches (like French knots or flower petals), keep in mind can be slippery
- Long stitches and satin stitches are ideal for this beauty
- Use a laying tool to control the ribbon as you lay your stitch
- Stitch with shorter lengths (they are easier to control)
- Use clear nail polish or FrayCheck™ on the ends if they ravel (let dry before stitching)
- Experienced stitchers say it looks amazing in tent stitch, but make sure it is just as flat on the back of your work as on the front
- Take some time to experiment on a scrap piece of canvas; you may discover stitches and ideas that are perfect for Neon Rays
Stitching tips from Needle Nook of La Jolla shop
“A laying tool is needed and there are several different ones on the market, all of which work well. Also, note that stitching tension will have an effect on the coverage of Neon Rays. A tighter tension will thin this yarn out and a looser tension will allow it to expand on the canvas. Also, try stabbing Neon Rays with the needle after it is threaded. By piercing the ribbon with the needle, you will avoid it slipping out of the needle. This will help you control your tension. Bury the Neon Rays well when you begin and end, as it will slip out easily. A Bargello tuck is recommended.”
How do you remove the fold in the ribbon that comes from being wound on a card?
Per stitchers, a flat iron or hair straightener is useful in smoothing out any folds or kinks in Neon Rays that may happen due to being wrapped on Rainbow Gallery cards. Others recommend using a slightly damp cosmetic sponge (softer and smoother than a kitchen sponge) to smooth out the fold. Disclaimer: Rainbow Gallery simply recommends that you test any method on scrap pieces to make sure you are getting the effect you want.
Can you use Neon Rays in cross stitch?
It can be used in cross stitch projects, but keep in mind each stitch should be laid flat to avoid twists, and that may add to your stitching time. Neon Rays is a unique, smooth, ribbon that will add a gorgeous sheen to your project. Choose areas that will benefit from a little extra stitching time and from this elegant look.
